LSA is the pay-per-lead unit at the very top of Google, above the regular ads and the map. You pay when a real customer calls, not when someone clicks. That makes it the first channel we turn on for almost every home services client, and the one owners most often run badly, because the levers are nothing like regular ads.
Ranking is behavior, not bids
You cannot simply outbid your way to #1. Google ranks LSA profiles on trust signals, and the biggest one is how you handle the leads it sends you.
- Answer everything, instantly. Response rate and speed are the loudest signal. We answer on the first ring, every hour the profile is live. One week of phoned-back message leads instead of in-platform replies dropped a badge from “replies in 15 minutes” to “1 day.” The recovery took far longer than the mistake.
- Review velocity beats review count. A steady drip of fresh reviews outranks a big stale pile. Build the ask into the job itself: our systems text the review link at closeout, automatically, on every completed job.
- Complete the profile like an application. Background check, license, insurance, business hours, photos, and every service subtype you actually do. Half-finished profiles get half the auction.
Discipline that protects the account
- Dispute junk, absorb judgment calls. Wrong-service and spam calls get disputed for credit, every week. But a real customer whose job was just too small is not junk; disputing those teaches Google your category targeting is wrong and poisons future matching.
- Kill the categories that send garbage. One generic category sent us fifteen junk leads and zero closes in a month. Turn off what does not convert; the profile ranks better doing fewer things well.
- Let the bidding breathe. Manual bids feel safe and usually starve the profile. When volume is ranking-constrained rather than bid-constrained, maximize-leads with a weekly budget ceiling wins. Watch cost per lead against job value, not against your comfort.
The part nobody tells you
LSA volume has a ceiling set by your market and your rank. It is a foundation, not a growth engine. The compounding move is pairing it with organic: the same trust signals that hold our #1 LSA spots also hold #1 organic rankings in both markets, and those clicks are free. When both slots at the top of the page belong to you, the customer calling down the list starts and ends with your number.
